Land degradation and unsustainable farming practices have severely reduced agricultural productivity, deepening rural poverty. India’s agricultural output is among the lowest globally, with a stark gap between irrigated and rainfed regions.
In rainfed areas, crop yields are only about one-third of the national average. Farmers in irrigated regions earn nearly 60% of their income from agriculture, while those in rainfed regions rely far less on farming, earning only 20–30% from agricultural activities.
Agriculture-focused NGOs play a crucial role in transforming farming practices by providing training, resources, and support for sustainable, organic, and climate-resilient agriculture. Their efforts aim to increase crop yields, improve farmer livelihoods, and ensure long-term food security. Alongside this, NGOs also focus on empowering women in agriculture and building Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) to achieve collective benefits.
Farmer Training & Support
NGOs conduct training programs on modern farming techniques, provide advisory services, and help farmers acquire new skills to boost productivity.
Sustainable Farming
Emphasis is placed on organic farming, water conservation, and eco-friendly practices to ensure agricultural sustainability.
Climate Resilience
Strategies are implemented to help farmers adapt to climate change, reduce input costs, and increase overall yields.
Empowering Farmers through FPOs
By forming Farmer Producer Organizations, farmers can market their produce collectively, reduce expenses through bulk procurement, and access better resources.
Agriculture is a vital sector of the economy of Odisha and a good deal has been achieved in this sector during the plan period.
Blending traditional practices with modern technology to boost agricultural productivity and climate resilience.
Empowering women through skill development, entrepreneurship, health initiatives and micro-finance opportunities.
